Jeremiah (The Younger)

Jeremiah Walker (1833-1885) was an interesting man to chase. I first found him with his family in England, and then later, in the Church of the Redemption, Spring Church, in Philadelphia. This is one of those families that was exciting to chase because there were records. It was also incredibly sad to chase this family as so many of the children died young.

Perhaps the best part of chasing this family was tag-teaming with my cousin Jamie. When I’ve done all I can and become frustrated, Jamie will step in and take over. She always seems to find the missing link to take us in the right direction. We were at a dead stop on the two oldest surviving children in this family when she found the right connection. Once I had the right names, I went digging through a different set of records and found the proof that linked his younger two daughters to Jeremiah. Jamie and I work well together and it’s always a lot of fun.

Jeremiah was born about 1833 in Ashton-Under-Lyne, the youngest known child of Jeremiah Walker and Mary Newton. His first documented appearance was on the 1841 census in the home of his parents.1 His age (birth year) remains consistent throughout his reasonably well documented life. He was baptized at the age of 11, on 18 Aug 1844 in St. Michael’s.2

On 13 Aug 1848, at the age of 15, Jeremiah arrived in Philadelphia aboard the Wyoming.3 It appears that he made this trip alone.

He is next found as a weaver on the 1850 census in Westhampton, Burlington, New Jersey.4

Jeremiah was married to Mary Jane Kimble on 28 Jan 1856 in Philadelphia at the Church of the Redemption, Spring Church.5 The record states she was “of Mercer County, NJ” but does not provide us with the couple’s ages or any other helpful information.

We were aware of Mary Jane’s maiden name based on her 1879 death certificate, which stated Mary Jane Kimble was 42 years old (born about 1837) in Burlington County, New Jersey, the daughter of John Kimble and Hannah Steward.6

**NOTE** There is a 7 Sep 1852 marriage record from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia for a Jerry Walker to Mrs. Mary J. Bailie which led to some early confusion. Our Jeremiah would have been about 19 and Mary Jane Kimble would have only been about 15/16. There is a Jerry Walker (1816-1886) buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery along with Mary Jane Walker died (1817-1873) who would be of the right ages for this record. They are both listed as being born in Philadelphia and found on the 1870 census in Ward 7 while our Jeremiah is in Trenton, New Jersey.

Jeremiah appears to have stayed in Philadelphia from at least 1856 through mid-1861. His first three children were born and baptized there. 1861 would have been a difficult year for the family as Scarlet Fever claimed their oldest daughter just weeks after the birth of their third child. Perhaps this was the impetus to move from Philadelphia. By late 1863, he and his family have relocated to Chambersburg, Mercer, New Jersey. His fourth child John Rogers Walker was born there 16 Nov 1863. [Chambersburg was a separate municipality at that time; it has since been incorporated by Trenton and most records are listed with Trenton as the location.] Jeremiah and Mary Jane had the rest of their children there and remained there for the rest of their lives.

He served during the Civil War in the 4th Regiment, New Jersey Infantry, Co B. He applied for an invalid pension, application #183218, and was approved, certificate #133577. There was an application filed for his minor children, application #351584 after his death. Those records should be available through the National Archives.

Mary Jane passed away 4 Nov 1879 and was buried in Mercer Cemetery in Trenton.7 There is a Mercer County Death Certificate which states her death as 21 Nov 1879, which is obviously in error and probably the date the certificate was issued.8 Her obituary appeared 6 Nov 1879.9

I haven’t yet located Jeremiah or his surviving children on the 1880 census or 1885 New Jersey State Census. Jeremiah died 6 Sep 1885 in Chambersburg, Mercer, New Jersey.10 He was interred in Mercer Cemetery.

Together, Jeremiah and Mary Jane had nine known children:

Mary Alice – born 8 Nov 1857 in Philadelphia, and baptized 9 Jul 1860 at the Church of the Redemption, Spring Church, Philadelphia.11 She died of Scarlet Fever on 4 May 1861 in Philadelphia, and was buried 7 May in Cedar Hills Cemetery.12

Margaret Ann – born 3 Jul 1859 in Philadelphia and baptized 9 Jul 1860 at the Church of the Redemption, Spring Church, Philadelphia, along with her older sister Mary Alice.13 Margaret shows her birth date and Jan 1858 on the 1900 census, but her baptismal record provided her birth date. Also, her older sister was born in Nov 1857 so the Jan 1858 date would have been impossible. Margaret married Joseph C. I. Stone on 9 Feb 1879. This date appears in several family trees, however I have not yet found a source record of the marriage.

As I’ve previously noted, there is always one child in the family who seems to pick up the slack. In this family, it was Margaret. After the death of Jeremiah in 1885, Margaret petitioned to be guardian of her younger sisters Mary Elizabeth and Sarah.14

Her sisters remained with her even after their marriages. Since we didn’t find the family on the 1880 Federal Census or the 1885 New Jersey Census we were unaware of the names of the two younger girls until the 1900 Federal Census. The guardian records are filed under the children’s names.

Joseph Stone died 12 Aug 1887 and was interred in Greenwood Cemetery.15 Margaret survived him by more than fifty years. She died 21 Nov 1943 and was also interred in Greenwood Cemetery.16

Margaret and Joseph had two children: Gertrude May (Stone) Schultz (13 Aug 1880-13 Oct 1960) and Anna Lucretia (Stone) Skillman (19 Dec 1881-?)

William Henry Walker – He was born 18 Apr 1861 in Philadelphia and baptized 26 May 1861 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.17 On 27 Dec 1888, he married Martha M. Green (1871-1934) in Trenton.18 On the 1900 census, Martha states she’s had 5 children, but only 1 living.19 I know of two of them. William died 16 Jun 1906 of complications from spinal meningitis.20 He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Martha married John Henry Dock in 1908. She died 24 Apr 1934 in Trenton and was buried with William.21

Their known children: William (Sep 1892-13 Jun 1893) and Howard (Mar 1896-27 May 1909).

John Rogers Walker – Born 16 Nov 1863,22 Died 30 Jul 1864 and buried 1 Aug 1864 in Mercer Cemetery.23 His obituary was published 1 Aug 1884.24

Jeremiah Walker – Born 27 Jul 1866,25 died 29 Oct 1882 (age 16) of typhoid fever, buried 31 Oct 1882 in Mercer Cemetery.26 His obituary was published on 31 Oct on page 2 in the Trenton Star Gazette.

Joshua O. Walker – Born 9 Sep 1869,27 died 17 Nov 1882 (age 13), buried 19 Nov 1882 in Mercer Cemetery.28 Joshua died less than one month after his older brother Jeremiah. No cause of death was listed, however he’d accidentally shot himself in the hand in June.

Mary Elizabeth Walker – born Aug 1870. She married William Raper (Feb 1858 – ?) on 25 Dec 1890 in Trenton.29 Mary died 18 Jan 1906 and was interred in Greenwood Cemetery on 20 Jan.30

Mary and William had one known child together: Joseph Lester Raper (19 Jul 1892 – 26 May 1899).

Sarah Walker – born 29 Jul 1872.31 She married William F. Brown (Nov 1855 – Bef 1910) on 21 Nov 1894.32 Sarah died 2 Jan 1918 and was buried 5 Jan 1918 in Greenwood Cemetery.33

Sarah and William had one known child together: Anna Alma (Brown) Gallager (6 Feb 1897 – ?)

Abraham Walker – born 4 Apr 1874,34 died 21 Jan 1875, buried 24 Jan 1875 in Mercer Cemetery.35

The British Are Coming

The Family of Jeremiah Walker (1799-1850)

This will be a fairly short post about the parents and siblings of Abraham Walker (1823-1884). As you’ll recall, Abraham was the immigrant ancestor who came from Lancashire to Philadelphia in the late 1840s. His father Jeremiah Walker was born in Hollinwood, Lancashire, in about 1792-93, the youngest found son of James Walker and Elizabeth Sandiford. He was baptized 3 Feb 1799 in St. Margaret’s in Hollinwood.1 Jeremiah married Mary Newton in the Manchester Cathedral on 25 Sep 1821.2 Mary Newton was born 1792-93 in Lancashire, but we do not yet know whom her parents were. There is simply not enough information at this time to narrow this down. Their ages were not listed in the baptismal records and the first time we find an age is with the 1841 England Census.3 Both were listed at 49 and Mary’s age stayed consistent in later censuses.

Cropped image of the 1841 census of Ashton-Under-Lyne.

Based on the known birth years and baptism dates of their children, this does not appear to be a family that rushed to the church to baptize their children as babies. While researching these families, I found numerous children 2-7 years of age in the burial records that did not appear in the baptism records. Jeremiah was buried 9 Sep 1850 in St. Peter’s Churchyard. Mary was buried 27 Dec 1878 in the same churchyard.

Jeremiah and Mary had six known children:

Abraham Walker (1823-1884) – previously discussed.

John Walker – born about 1824, baptized 23 Jul 1826 in St. Michaels.4 It appears that John also came to Philadelphia. He married Mary A. Thompson in Philadelphia 26 Feb 1859.  John and Mary’s son Charles Alfred Walker was born there in 1863.  Mary died 7 Sep 1864 and John died of typhoid fever 19 Dec 1865.7,8 In 1868, Charles was baptized as Abraham and Ann’s son,9 but on his 1880 death certificate, Abraham named his parents as John and Mary.10 Sadly, with the number of John and Mary Walkers in both Lancashire and Philadelphia, it’s near impossible to sort them out to gather any further details.  Charles Alfred Walker died of endocarditis 24 Jun 1880 and was interred in Mount Moriah.

Martha Walker – born about 1826, died May 1828, buried 4 May 1828 in St. Michael’s Churchyard.11 The burial register stated her age as 2.

Jonathan Walker – born Sep 1828, baptized 2 Feb 1829,12 died Jun 1830, buried 12 Jun 1830, St. Michael’s.13 The burial register stated his age as 19 months.

Elizabeth Walker – born May 1831, baptized 15 Jan 1832,14 died Oct 1832, buried 7 Oct 1832, St. Michael’s.15 The burial register stated her age as 17 months.

Jeremiah Walker – born about 1833, baptized 18 Aug 1844, died 6 Sep 1885 in Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey. He may not be in my direct line, but I found him fascinating, and fairly well documented—plus chasing his kids became a team project with my cousin Jamie. His story and sources will be in the next post will be about Jeremiah and his family.

The Baseball Team

The Nine Children of William and Nannie (Heisler) Walker

Let me preface this by saying that these people have been nothing less than a giant pain in my… neck. It appears that the Walkers didn’t really associate much later in life and talked to each other rarely. Most of them were deceased by the time I started to pay attention to family things in the mid-1960s. My cousins literally had no idea that the man who lived two doors away from them when they were children was their grandfather’s brother.

It’s possible that once Nannie Walker was no longer alive to tell them to get along, many of her children simply stopped doing so. It’s much more likely that once they moved out of the old neighborhood and their children married and produced grandchildren, they simply didn’t get drawn together as they had before. What is clear, is that with the aging and subsequent deaths of most of Nannie and William’s grandchildren, information about their parents and cousins was much harder to come by.

William Z and Nannie had nine known children – enough for their own baseball team: William Leslie, Eleanor Mary, Edna, Frank Orme, John E., William Harry, Ralph, William, Marion Edith, and Ruth. In 1900 Nannie Walker stated that she has had 7 children, 5 of whom are living – on the page are Leslie, Eleanor, Edna, John, and Harry – deceased would be Frank and Ralph. Marion and Ruth were not yet born. All children appear on a family bible page, some are in the Philadelphia Birth Registrations, and some have their birth recorded at the time of their baptism.

I have a copy of a family bible page from my grandmother’s papers that listed the birth dates of all nine Walker children.1 My grandmother told me that the page was all some of the kids (including my grandfather Harry) had for proof of birth. Those birth dates match the birth dates found for some of the children in the baptismal records from the Church of Redemption. Not all the children were baptized in the same church, some were baptized in groups as older children, and some weren’t baptized at all. The bible record appears to be a copy made at a later date as the information is all done in the same hand and in a consistent manner.

Here’s what we (my cousin Jamie – an incredibly talented researcher – and I) can currently prove. Any help in filling in the blanks is appreciated. I’ve sourced the children here, but not the grandchildren. Those sources are available on the BurgraffScott tree on Ancestry and will eventually appear on Family Search.

William Leslie Walker – known as Leslie. He was born on 8 Jul 18832 and baptized 13 Sep 1885 in the Church of the Holy Redemption.3 In 1900, he’s found at home with his parents, working as a carpet weaver.4 Then Leslie disappeared and the first time I find any records for him is the birth of his oldest daughter in 1922 in Cook County, Illinois.5 He married Madeline Williams in about 1920, probably in Illinois. Madeline was born 15 Oct 1898 in Saginaw, Michigan, the daughter of William David Williams and Mamie M. Sanborn. I have not yet located Leslie on the 1910 or 1920 census. He and his wife and children next appear on the 1930 census in Philadelphia, living with his parents.6 He’s working as a circulation salesman for the newspaper. Extremely confusing is the 1940 census when he’s enumerated as Harold A. Walker.7 It’s impossible to know the how or why, but this is our Leslie and his wife and children. He’s now employed as an engineer in building construction. Leslie died 20 Nov 1965 and was buried with his parents in Greenmount Cemetery.8,9 His wife Madeline died in Sep 1983.10 Her burial location is not known. Update – We found more records on Leslie and there will be a separate post for him soon.  I’ll link it here when I complete it.

Leslie and Madeline had two known children:

1. Madeline Marion Walker – born 21 Jan 1922 in Cook County, Illinois, baptized 12 Dec 1934 in the Church of the Redemption, Philadelphia. Madeline married Joseph E. Rocke (1917-1988) and died 24 Oct 2009 in Warminster, Buck, Pennsylvania.
2. Leslie Jeanne Walker – born 15 Dec 1924 in Cook County, Illinois, baptized 12 Dec 1934 in the Church of the Redemption, Philadelphia. Jeanne married Clement Aloysius Paff, Sr. (1924-1989) and died 5 Jun 2010 in Levittown, Bucks, Pennsylvania.

Eleanor Mary Walker. She was born 3 Jan 188511 and baptized 13 Sep 1885 in the Church of the Holy Redemption.12 Eleanor married Harry Chester Hirst (1886-1966) in about 1920. They relocated to Collingswood, Camden, New Jersey. Eleanor died there 17 Jan 196513 and is interred in Harleigh Cemetery with her daughter and husband.14 Eleanor and Harry had one known child:
1. Janice Elizabeth Hirst – born 17 Mar 1923 in Camden County, New Jersey. Janice was a nurse in the U.S. Army. She died at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado, on 15 Aug 1946. She was returned to her family in New Jersey and interred in Harleigh Cemetery.

Edna Walker. Per the family bible page, she was born 15 Apr 1887.15 I did not locate a baptism record for her. There is birth record for a Ralphedda Walker, daughter of William, born 16 Apr 1887. It is possible this is our Edna. I would need to see the original record to be sure. She appears in the home of her parents through 1930. In 1940, she appears as a boarder, still living in Philadelphia. The record states she’d been living in the same home since 1935. Edna was employed as a looper in the hosiery industry from at least 1920 and this appears as the occupation on her death certificate. The looper is the person that puts the toes in the hose and closes the toe. Edna never married and died 18 Dec 1964 in Philadelphia.16 While the birth date on the record did not match what we have, her parents were listed and the informant was her nephew Frederick W. Schmitt. She was buried 21 Dec 1964 in Greenmount Cemetery. No obituary has been located for Edna.

Frank Orme Walker. Frank was born 15 Apr 189017 and died of Chorea 17 Apr 1898.18 Frank was not found in the birth registrations. Chorea is an abnormal involuntary movement derived from the Greek word “dance.” It is characterized by brief, abrupt, irregular, unpredictable, non-stereotyped movements. He was buried on 19 Apr 1898 in Mount Moriah Cemetery. An obituary is included with the record from the Oliver Bair Funeral Home, but it is not known what paper it came from. The obit was not found in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

John E. Walker. John was born 27 Aug 1892. John was not found in the birth registrations. In about 1916, he married Marie Krause (2 Nov 1892 – 11 May 1959), daughter of Ewin A. Krause and Mary Hunsicker. John died in May 196619 in Philadelphia and was buried with Marie on 18 May 1966 in Hillside Cemetery.20 John was missing a leg but I never knew how or when this loss occurred.
